Santa Teresa de Avila Parish Church in Talisay City

In what was once the center of Talisay City, the Santa Teresa de Avila Parish Church serves as a stark reminder that the poblacion was once the center of governance in Talisay City before the new city hall was relocated to Lawaan III.

Reminiscent of Spanish-era town centers, the poblacion of the then municipality of Talisay was where the main Roman Catholic Church was located. The town hall and other important offices of the locality were also found in the area. Shortly after it became a city, the seat of government of Talisay City was transferred. The new city hall is now located in Lawa-an III along the Cebu South Coastal Road. Despite that, the old poblacion retains its significance. Many churchgoers still go to hear mass on Sundays and religious holy days at the Santa Teresa de Avila Church.

Temple of Leah: An Attempt At Classic Architecture

When some of my kin visited Cebu in November 2015, they wanted to visit the Temple of Leah. I accompanied them to the place in Barangay Busay. It is located nearby the Lantaw Native Restaurant Busay, the Mountainview Nature Park, and the Roosevelt Hideaway Resort. Does the building look familiar to you? Have you kind of seen this somewhere? That's because its is built as a copy of the Parthenon in Greece.

An Attempt at Classic Architecture

The Temple of Leah is an attempt at classic architecture, specially Greek and Roman. It has similarities with American colonial era buildings that heavily utilize piers and columns with Greek and Roman elements such as the Aduana Building, the Cebu Provincial Capitol, the Compania Maritima Building, and the old BPI building.

Kamampay Public Beach in Cordova, Cebu, Philippines

Cebu is known for its white sand beaches. Not all beaches in Cebu, however, are of the fine grain, white sand variety. Cordova's Kamampay Public Beach is one such example.

Picturesque Kamampay Beach

Unlike most beaches in Cebu, you don't come to Kamampay Public Beach to enjoy bathing in the water. You don't come to marvel at it's white sands. The limestone coast at Kamampay Beach means that the waters are kind of murky. Mud is formed from limestone soaked in seawater. You come to Kamampay Public Beach to enjoy the vista of the rocky beach scenery. You also enjoy the sight of mangroves seen on the horizon off its coast.

Kamampay Public Beach
Kamampay Public Beach

According to a poster at Kamampay Beach, it has it's own value. The value of the place is economic, social, aesthetic, and socio-cultural. The economic value is because it provides for livelihood of the residents. Tourism potential accounts for the socio-cultural value. As a place where locals gather, it has social value. Being a tourist spot being promoted, the local government is banking on it's uncommon aesthetic.

Buagsong: Bakasi Capital of Cordova

The barangay of Buagsong is one of two barangays considered as the eel or bakasi capital of Cordova. The other one is barangay Day-as. A common livelihood of the residents of barangay Buagsong is gathering eels. There is a small port for bancas of fisherfolk who live in the village. These catch are then sold to restaurants or carenderias that serve up dishes of eel recipes. The most popular eel recipes are nilarang na bakasi and piniritong bakasi. One popular restaurant that serve up these dishes is Lantaw Native Restaurant. Lantaw has a branch at the boardwalk in barangay Day-as. Many of the stores along Kamampay Public Beach serve these dishes as well.

For a deeper cultural experience, you can ask the locals to show you their ways. You can ask them to show you how the eels are caught, slaughtered, seasoned, and cooked.

Purple Craves' Dessert Buffet: A Treat for Your Sweet Tooth

Calling the attention of all those with a massive sweet tooth out there in Cebu! This one is for you. How does a PhP 143 per person dessert buffet sound to you? All you can drink bottomless iced tea is already included in the price. No, this is not a rhetorical question. What I'm talking about actually exists for real. It happens every Saturday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Purple Craves Cafe. The cafe is located at the ground floor of the Century Plaza Hotel along Juana Osmeña Street in Cebu City.

I had the chance to partake in the Purple Craves dessert buffet. This was during the recent Cebu Blogging Summit 2.0. The event was held at the Century Plaza Hotel last 12 December 2015. Along with media professionals and volunteers, we were treated to an all you can eat buffet of the sweet creations at Purple Craves Cafe. And oh boy! What a real treat it was.

Purple Craves Dessert Buffet Menu

So what did we get to enjoy at the Purple Craves dessert buffet? Of course there was bottomless iced tea. I love iced tea so much and I drank several glasses. There were fruits such as watermelons, pineapples, and mangoes. I knew these would make me feel full right away so I stayed away from it.

Purple Craves Cafe: Wedding-Themed Cafe in Cebu City

Affordable prices, great ambiance, and amazing flavors. These three don't usually come together when one is talking about restaurants in Cebu. But worry no more because we have found a place that have achieved the marriage of value for money with great food and beautiful aesthetics.

The place we are referring to is the Purple Craves Cafe at the ground floor of the Cebu Century Plaza Hotel.

Chicken Deli Bacolod Restaurant Opens 1st Branch in Cebu

From its humble beginnings in 1983, Chicken Deli Bacolod restaurant has now opened its 22nd branch. Their newest store is at the Robinson's Galleria Cebu, it's first ever restaurant in Cebu. Being a Bacolod restaurant, Chicken Deli will of course offer Bacolod's famous chicken inasal. More than chicken inasal however, there is a lot more Chicken Deli can offer to the Cebuanos' selective and discriminating palate.

It started as a hole in the wall place along Bacolod City's Lacson Avenue by the then 29-year old widow Mamang Lourdes. Chicken Deli Bacolod restaurant has expanded its menu from simply serving chicken inasal and pork barbecue to now include many Pinoy favorites such as kare-kare, sinigang, halo-halo, and more.

Cebu Branch Now Open!

Along with my fellow bloggers from the Cebu Blogging Community, we were invited to witness the store blessing and pre-opening event of Chicken Deli's Cebu branch at Robinsons Galleria Cebu last 9 December 2015. During the event, we got to sample the menu at Chicken Deli.

Gayuma ni Maria Restaurant: Romantic With a Hint of Naughty

On an otherwise boring street in midtown Cebu City, the colorful flowery detail at a small nook catches my attention. A flower shop! That's what I thought. But a flower shop it is not.

Gayuma ni Maria
is a full service restaurant themed as a fun dating place with not just a subtle hint of naughty. As mystifying as its external appearance, the food itself at Gayuma ni Maria is mesmerizing.

Wasted Chef: Unlimited Shawarma, Burger, Pizza, and Pasta

Are you a fan of Mediterranean cuisine, Greek food, and Italian favorites? Wasted Chef Restaurant just opened up along Gorordo Avenue across the Asilo dela Milagrosa Church in Cebu City. The house specialties are the Greek pita burger, shawarma, a couple of pasta dishes, and a couple more pizza varieties.

Wasted Chef

Wasted Chef is owned by Powerspoonz band's resident drummer Ian Sekong and his skater boy friends. Wasted Chef was not their original plan. They would have wanted to open a seafood buffet restaurant. When they were still looking for a suitable location for their project, the space across the Asilo dela Milagrosa became available. It was in the same business complex where Ian's Azul Tuslob Buwa venture was also located. It was however not suitable for a seafood buffet place. So they tweaked their plans and came up with the concept of offering a buffet for Mediterranean, Greek, and Italian food. This was also something new in Cebu.

Shabu-Way Restaurant: Eating Shabu-Shabu the Right Way

I recently got invited to sample the menu at Shabu Way Restaurant at the Ayala Terraces together with some of my blogger pals from the Cebu Blogging Community.

Together, we enjoyed learning the technical stuff about how to eat shabu-shabu the right way. We now better appreciate this part of Japanese cuisine.

Yakimix: Japanese Restaurant Offers Eat All You Can Buffet

After months of anticipation, I have finally dined at the Yakimix Smokeless Grill and Japanese Restaurant at the Capitol Square. Yakimix is located along Escario Street, Cebu City. It wasn't the best experience, but there were some good points nonetheless. I honestly do not understand the hype and the buzz about this new eat and drink all you can restaurant in Cebu City now that I have tried it. I think they over-hyped this too much that it can disappoint.

Problem Number 1 at Yakimix: Parking Space

My brother and I went to eat lunch at Yakimix on a Monday and the place was packed. This made it harder for us to find a good parking space. And the restaurant staff did not help us at all with that issue. All they said that there was a security guard assigned for it but we never found him. We had to cross the street and park at the Escario Central Mall.

The Food and Drinks

Sushi and Tempura

The sushi and tempura station is where Yakimix gets it quite right but not really extraordinary. They are a sushi restaurant for crying out loud! I devoured a fair amount of sushi and rolls that had salmon or shrimp on it. It's a Japanese restaurant, it better get this right. Then again, I've tried a lot of better sushi somewhere else.

Hala Paella: A Taste of Spanish Comfort Food in Cebu City

On the night of my 35th birthday last 15 November 2015, I went out with my brother Nathan and cousin John Stephen. We headed out to Hala Paella at the Banilad Town Center. BTC has some good restaurants. We hoped this one would be another good find.

Hala Paella serves Spanish comfort food in Cebu. Grab one or two of their rice dish specials and pair it with one or two of their main courses, and you are good to go.

The Rediscover Life Park

The new park at the atrium inside Parkmall Cebu was designed by Architect Buck Richnold Sia and Miss Janice Minor. Hale Manna Beach Resort and Coastal Gardens in Moalboal

Moalboal is a prime beach destination in the southern part of Cebu. It's most popular beaches are Bas Diot or White Beach in barangay Saavedra and Panagsama Beach in barangay Basdiot. Both have been promoted as recreational diving sites and awesome beach destinations. The drawback of this aggressive promotion is that sometimes, you have too little privacy in these public beaches. There are a few resorts in the area that does offer some quiet space for its guests, away from where most of the noise. Yet, these resorts are not too far away from where you can enjoy the natural beauty of Moalboal's beaches. One such resort is the Hale Manna Beach Resort and Coastal Gardens in Bas Daku, Saavedra, Moalboal, Cebu. I recently visited Hale Manna. I was tasked to facilitate a 2-day team building program for Oceana Philippines last 12-13 November 2015. CTFN affiliate Chen Tan accompanied me during that trip.

Escario Central Hotel: Setting A Standard for Budget Hotels in Cebu

When you are on a limited budget while in Cebu City and need a hotel that is both affordable, accessible, and decent, try the Escario Central Hotel. It is located at the Escario Central Mall along Escario Street, Cebu City. I booked one night here recently and I was amazed at how it turned out.

Amazing Location

Escario Central Hotel is located at a perfect location. It is at the far end of the Escario Central Mall, right at the heart of the city. It is very accessible to churches, malls, government offices, restaurants, and other businesses. Right within Escario Central Mall is a 7-11 store that is open 24/7, several restaurants and cafes. Zubuchon, Politics, and Porto's are some of the restaurants at this strip mall. There's also Nice Day Carwash and a bank. Right across the mall is another business complex with restaurants such as Yakimix, Hausbrandt Caffe, and Cebu's Original Lechon Belly, some banks, a fastfood, and a number of other businesses. Also a stone's throw away are other restaurants such as Penong's, McDonald's, and Combini Cafe. It is a short walking distance to the Cebu Provincial Capitol. The hotel is a jeepney ride away from Ayala Center Cebu. It is also a jeepney ride to either midtown or downtown Cebu.

Affordable Rates

Despite its central location in the city, the rates at Escario Central Hotel are not expensive. I got an Orange Room for PhP 1,800 for one night. The Red Room is even cheaper at PhP 1,500 a night but there was none available the night I stayed there. At that price, there's no surprise no Red Room was available anymore.

Decent Accommodations

Despite the very affordable price, the quality is not compromised at Escario Central Hotel. The Orange Room had 2 queen size beds. It can easily fit 4 average size persons. Of course PhP 1,800 was the rate for 2 persons. The Red Room features 2 double beds. Both rooms has it's own toilet and bath, has 2 complimentary water bottles, 2 towels, 2 pieces of bath soap and 2 sachets of shampoo.

Maple: American Fine Dining Restaurant in Cebu City

When you are down for some really good food and you wouldn't mind the cost, head to Maple. It is an American restaurant at The Terraces in Ayala Center Cebu. It is one of the few fine dining restaurants located in the mall.

The Ambiance

The very first thing you will notice at Maple is that it provides great privacy. There are not too many people dining in. When we went there, we were greeted with a single waitress working that shift. It was lunch. There were only two other sets of guests being served aside from us.

After we placed our orders, I marveled at the interior design. The interior is dominated by the maple brown color for obvious reasons. They have some sleek hardwood furniture.

The Food

Salmon Catch

I love salmon! And Maple's Salmon Catch is so far the best salmon recipe I have come across. At Php 520, I'm sure I will be back for more soon. The salmon is served with vegetables and orzo pasta. I had my salmon pan seared. You can also choose to have it grilled.

Dong Juan: Pasta and Pizza Overload in Cebu, Philippines

After the first ever Cebu Blogging Community members' orientation program at the Global Hub Serviced Offices, I went with a few other Cebu Blogging Community Leads to Ridges along F. Cabahug Street in Kasambagan, Cebu City. Before we went for some musical recreation at Watever KTV, the gang decided to have lunch at Dong Juan Restaurant. We took advantage of their Everyday Pasta promo which runs until 15 November 2015. It was an early birthday treat for me. Present during lunch were CBC partnership lead and co-founder Bjornson Bernales, CBC social media manager Channel Marie "Shanky" Imperial, food bloggers lead representative Carlo Andrew "Caloy" Olano, photo bloggers lead representative Meliton John "Emjae" Argallon, fashion bloggers lead representative Katherine Annika Cutar, her beau Ramzy Magbitang, and yours truly.

 Pasta and Pizza Overload

We ordered four different kinds of pasta dishes. Dong Juan's Everyday Pasta promo allowed us to pay for only the two more expensive pasta dishes. Then we got the two cheaper dishes for free. We ordered Gambas Al Ajillo, Pacific, Cebu Native Chorizo, and Linguini Carbonara pasta varieties. All the dishes we ordered came with a slice of garlic bread. For pizza, we ordered Dong Juan's Cheeze and and Garlic Pizza. We also ordered the Happy Drink for our beverage.

Gambas al Ajillo

Dong Juan's version of the Gambas al ajillo not only features a pasta in pesto sauce with shrimps. It also comes with bonito fish shavings. The CBC bloggers marveled at how these bonito flakes kept moving for quite a while when the dish was served.

Cebu Provincial Capitol: Seat of Cebu's Provincial Government

The seat of the provincial government of the Central Visayas province of Cebu is the Cebu Provincial Capitol Building. It is where the governor of the province holds office. It was declared as a Philippine national landmark on 9 July 2008.

The Capitol Building is located right at the intersection of Escario Street and Osmena Boulevard (also popularly referred to as Jones Avenue, its former name) in barangay Capitol Site, Cebu City. While the Cebu Provincial Capitol is located in Cebu City, Cebu's provincial government does not administer or govern Cebu City. Cebu City is classified as a highly urbanized city (HUC). Still, Cebu City is considered by many as the capital of the central Visayan province. Lapulapu City also gained highly urbanized city status and is governed independently. Mandaue City is also classified as a highly urbanized city but is under the administration of Cebu province.

Cebu Teambuilding Facilitators Network: Cebu Is An Adventure

Cebu is a prime destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibits (MICE) in the Philippines. A segment of the MICE market is composed of organizations having their team building events in Cebu. This is a market being served by Cebu Teambuilding Facilitators Network.

Team Building + Metro Cebu Tour

In March 2014, Cebu Teambuilding Services was hired by General Electric Company-Retail Financing to do an Amazing Race-inspired team building program for around 40 employees. The group responded to the challenge and designed an urban race with challenges scattered in places of tourist interest around the cities of Lapulapu and Cebu. The challenges also allowed participants to learn the local culture. They learned a few Cebuano words. A blind musician taught them to sing a Cebuano folk song. They interacted with locals. And they enjoyed Cebuano foods. The rave reviews from participants of this first event encouraged us to continue to market this event, especially for organizations not based in Cebu.

Cebu Urban Race Team Building

Inspired by the TV hit series Amazing Race, Cebu Teambuilding Services designed an urban race as a team building theme. The objective is to market the urban race team building theme to organizations based outside Cebu. Cebu-based organizations can still opt for this program.

The urban race team building theme is designed in such a way that participants get to optimize both the experience participating in a team building program and explore Cebu through some of its heritage sites. Most of the challenges will happen at tourist spots around Metro Cebu.

2 Program Options: Race-type or Scavenger Hunt-type Program

There are two options for the urban race team building theme: a linear race and a non-linear scavenger hunt. In the linear race type of program, succeeding challenges are revealed once participants complete a prior task. In the scavenger hunt type of program, participants complete a list of challenges revealed at the start of the program where they decide which tasks to complete first.

Nature of Challenges

The nature of challenges in the urban race team building program largely involves appreciating the local culture and heritage. Sample challenges are:
  • Create a music video of a Cebuano folk song.
  • Learn to dance the Sinulog with candle vendors at the Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino.
  • Learn the 8 basic strikes of the traditional Cebuano martial art of Arnis.
  • Take a group picture inside the Philippines' oldest dated house.
  • Take a photo of an old plancha in one of the oldest Philippine houses.

Location of Challenges

The urban race team building theme is designed in a way that participants experience Cebu as a local Cebuano would on a daily basis. Participants get to interact with locals. They learn how to commute from one place to another. Their negotiation skills will be tested by local vendors. At the same time, participants also get to visit places of tourist interest. Most of the challenge stations are scattered in areas around Metro Cebu. Probable locations of challenges are at Muelle Osmena wharf and lighthouse, Mactan Shrine, Fort San Pedro, Fuente Osmena Circle, Plaza Independencia, Basilica Minore del Sto. Nino, Colon Street, and Plaza Hamabar.

More About Cebu Teambuilding Services
