Mismukuno Japanese Restaurant in Cebu City, Philippines

One way of trying out restaurants without breaking the bank is to be on the lookout for deals they offer. We chanced upon a deal from a Japanese restaurant in Ayala Center Cebu recently where they offered buy one, take one on their Japanese rolls. Mismukuno Teppanyaki has this offer from 2 to 5 pm. The offer was buy any two (2) kinds of sushi rolls and pay only for the more expensive one.

What we Ordered

So we ordered chicken teriyaki roll maki, salmon skin maki, and a pork teppanyaki plate. They served us some miso soup before we got our orders. Mismukuno specializes in Japanese rolls. Their menu contains ten (10) house specialty rolls: volcano maki, California maki, chicken teriyaki roll maki, sunrise maki, tempura maki, dynamite maki, mango cheese roll maki, Mazinger roll maki, salmon skin maki, and Mismukuno maki. The price for their rolls range from PhP 180 to PhP 230.

They also serve kiddie maki, kani or crab tempura, ebi or shrimp tempura, kakiage or vegetable tempura, kani salad, green tea ice cream, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, ika or squid sashimi, ebi sushi, ika sushi, salmon sushi, tuna sushi, kani sushi, beef teppanyaki, chicken teppanyaki, pork teppanyaki, chicken teriyaki, Karubi cut or short ribs steak, Angus beef steak, cube roll steak, strip loin steak, scallops, prawns, yakisoba, Mahi-mahi fish, salmon head teriyaki, mixed seafood, pan-seared salmon, mushrooms, tofu, ika teriyaki, and beef teriyaki bowl.

There was nothing to complain about the rolls we ordered. While the flavors were obviously not original Japanese, they were good nonetheless. I'm assuming they blended the flavors to make it attractive for Filipino diners who prefer their food to be sweeter.

As for the pork teppanyaki, the presentation looked different from what we saw in the menu. We got our bean sprouts along with the meat but they did not serve us cabbage like what we saw on their menu.

Tokyo Tokyo Restaurant in Cebu City, Philippines

Those who know me very well knows how much I love Japanese cuisine and that I will go out of my way to try Japanese restaurants around Cebu, Philippines. In fact, if you notice, there are a lot of articles about Japanese restaurants in this blog. How happy I was when Tokyo Tokyo finally opened at the SM Seaside City Cebu.

Tokyo Tokyo Japanese Restaurant in Cebu City, Philippines

I first dined at a Tokyo Tokyo restaurant in Manila in 2011 and was craving for it since then. They finally opened their first store in Cebu, Philippines at the ground floor of SM Seaside City at the South Road Properties. It was April 2016 when I visited with my brother Nathan. Here is what we ordered:

Sumo Meal at Tokyo Tokyo Japanese Restaurant in Cebu City, Philippines

It was cherry blossom season in Japan when we dined at Tokyo Tokyo. Because of that, Tokyo Tokyo had a limited time promotion on a sumo meal which we ordered. The meal served in a bento box had ebi tempura, yasai itame, beef misono, chicken karaage, and a vegetable salad. It also came with two (2) bowls of rice and two (2) glasses of cherry mist drink, which was Sprite mixed with some cherry flavors. The beef and vegetable dishes were alright, others below expectations.

Chicken Katsu at Tokyo Tokyo Japanese Restaurant in Cebu City, Philippines

Part of the promotion that Tokyo Tokyo was running at the time was a discount on chicken katsu that came along with the sumo meal. And so we availed of it. I do have high expectations with katsu dishes and this one was below par. The breading was too hard, was overcooked, and the sauce that came with it was uninspiring. In my opinion, they should have served the sauce in a separate bowl.

Ebi Tempura at Tokyo Tokyo Japanese Restaurant in Cebu City, Philippines

I remember the first time I tried the ebi tempura at a Tokyo Tokyo branch in Manila that it was pretty good. It was below expectations when I tried it again in Cebu.

Affordable Japanese Food at Yoshinoya Restaurant

Those who know me well know that I am a sucker for Japanese food. How delighted I was to learn that the Yoshinoya Restaurant finally opened its first branch in Cebu at the SM Seaside City. A second branch is also opening soon at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

One fine day last December 2015, we decided to dine at the Yoshinoya Restaurant in SM Seaside City largely because I had a coupon that says I can avail of free serving of California Maki for a minimum spend of PhP 500. This was from a promotion on my SM Advantage Card. Initially, the store did not honor the offer since the electronic coupon from the SM Advantage Mobile Application only indicated the offer was only available at SM Mall of Asia, SM Manila, SM Megamall, and SM North EDSA and not at SM Seaside City. Luckily however, the manager at the SM Seaside City branch later on agreed to give us the free item, a cost of PhP 59 anyway for four (4) rolls of California Maki.

What We Ordered

For appetizers, we ordered ebi tempura and gyoza. Both were fast food-grade. Three pieces of gyoza sells at PhP 59. A piece of ebi tempura retails at PhP 39, three (3) pieces at PhP 115, and six (6) pieces at PhP 229.

The California Maki which we got for free was fast food-grade as well, but I am not complaining at its cost of PhP 59 for 4 slices. Plus we got this one on the house.

For our meal, we ordered a bowl of beef gyudon and two (2) jumbo plates. the gyudon was spot on. Regular size order sells at PhP 139 while large orders are at PhP 175.

Our jumbo plate orders were beef and yakiniku and beef and tempura, The beef and yakiniku jumbo plate was a plate of plain steamed rice topped with beef gyudon, pork yakiniku, and bean sprouts. PhP 215 per order.

Baked Scallops

I have heard great reviews about the baked scallops at Kuya J. So we took one order just to try. It was not the best one I tried in Cebu to be honest and so that was a bit of disappointment. It wasn't bad however, it should still make my top five (5) list. PhP 165 per serving of ten (10) pieces.

Humbinagoongan Rice Platter

While we ordered some plain steamed rice, we were also attracted to their fried rice varieties. We had a choice of danggit rice, dilis and salted egg rice, humbinagoongan rice, chorizo rice, sisig rice, and crab rice. We ordered the humbinagoongan rice platter. It was a bit too salty for my taste.

2 Treats to Try at Frozen Snack Bar in Cebu City, Philippines

We chanced upon a cafe near midtown Cebu City specializing on frozen treats such as ice cream, banana splits, sundaes, and parfaits. I'm referring to Frozen Snack Bar at the Cebu Century Plaza Complex along Juana Osmeña Street, barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City, Philippines.

Two (2) Treats to Try at Frozen Snack Bar in Cebu City, Philippines

During one of the business meetings I held for Cebu Teambuilding Services back in the day, one was held at the Frozen Snack Bar and we ordered some light snacks while we discussed important things with my business associates.

Street Food Platter

We ordered a street food platter which had colored shrimp crackers, kikiam, squid rolls, and fish balls with a sweet chili sauce accompanying it. Nothing fancy, tastes just like how we expected it.

Chocolate Supreme Whopper

Frozen Snack Bar is basically a dessert cafe. While they do serve meals, it's the dessert items that stand out. We ordered one big dessert based on the recommendation of the waitstaff: the Chocolate Supreme Whopper. There were five (5) of us and it was a real challenge to consume just one order. Chocolate lovers will really love this treat. It has chocolate wafer sticks, several scoops of chocolate ice cream, chocolate puffs, chocolate cereals, and marshmallows served on a big bowl of crushed ice.

Cowgirl Snacks at Rodeo Grill Barbecue + Sizzlers in Cebu City

Rodeo Grill Barbecue + Sizzlers had buy one, take one offers on cowgirl snacks and we took on two of them when me and my brother visited SM City Cebu late in the month of April of 2016. Cowgirl snacks refer to smaller portions served at Rodeo Grill, a wild west saloon-inspired restaurant with several branches in Cebu City, Philippines. These cowgirl snacks are only served during a certain period of the day, much like the off peak happy hour period of other restaurants. The time falls between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. of ordinary weekdays.

Cowgirl Snacks at Rodeo Grill Barbecue + Sizzlers in Cebu City, Philippines

We ordered two (2) sets of cowgirl snacks: crispy chicken and pancit canton. Since we ordered between 3 to 5 p.m., the buy one, take one promo was still on. So we got two (2) servings of each item we ordered. Too bad they ran out of cowboy burgers that time. Those burgers must have really been good! I will have to find out the next time I visit then.

Pancit Canton at Rodeo Grill Barbecue + Sizzlers

The pancit canton came with a pair of toasted bread slices and a pair of hard-boiled egg slices. It's a light snack with less salt than I was used to which is good because it's healthier with the reduced sodium in it. It also has a good mix of vegetables in the noodles. Cost: PhP 119 per order.

Crispy Chicken at Rodeo Grill Barbecue + Sizzlers

The crispy chicken was true to its label, maybe even too much crisp in it. Two (2) slices of breaded fried chicken was served on a bed of crispy noodles with half a cup of white rice and gravy.  The snack-size portion had a small slice (chicken wing) and a large slice (breast) but was surprisingly filling. We barely finished this part of our meal. While we enjoyed the fried chicken, we barely touched the noodles, it was too hard to eat. Cost: PhP 169 per order.

Overall, it was a normal dining experience at Rodeo Grill Barbecue + Sizzlers but two (2) dishes and a single visit would not justify a verdict. So, I look forward to coming back and trying the other dishes. Specially that cowboy burger. I hope they will have it in stock on my next visit.

Traffic Solutions for Cebu: Motorcycle Safety (Part 4 of 8)

Generally, motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to die in a crash compared to car occupants. While motorcycles account for only 2 percent of vehicles on the road, they are involved in more than 10 percent of crashes. (Source: Aerotech News)

In Cebu, there seems to be few laws enacted or enforced to ensure motorcycle safety. It's a good thing the 22nd annual motorcycle convention of the Motorcycles Federation of the Philippines was held in Cebu City in 2016. I hope they are able to impart to its members and the public motorcycle safety tips and influence motorcycle riders to be responsible road users.

This is because motorcycles don't have most of the safety features of other vehicles. Refer to the infographic below:
