I started blogging as a hobby. It was only months later after I started blogging that I used it for business, whether by joining ad networks, sponsored posting, or as a medium to promote my training services. While I was involved in the strategic planning sessions of a blogging organization back in the day, I never really got serious about my blogging. I just did enough to promote my services and everything else was leisurely writing about my travel experiences, most of which are from my career as a training and development facilitator. It was only early last year, that I became a more active blogger not only in my business blog but in my travel blogs as well. By stroke of luck or wonderful circumstance, I was able to join the Cebu Blogging Community and cliché as it may sound, it is a match made in blogging heaven. I would move on to be appointed as one of the community leads late last year. And as the year is starting in 2016, I was one of seventeen (17) bloggers who stepped up to the plate and decided to enroll in the DigitalPro Bootcamp for Professional Bloggers.
What is the DigitalPro Bootcamp?
The 21-day DigitalPro Bootcamp for Professional Bloggers is organized by eSTRATmedia for the Cebu Blogging Community, one of the leading blogging organizations not only in Cebu but also in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. The official technology partner for the bootcamp is Globe Prepaid and the classroom sessions will be done at the Global Hub Executive Office on the 12th Floor of the Keppel Building in Cebu Business Park. All in all, seventeen (17) of the twenty (20) slots opened were taken.
Realizations From Day 1
The first session of the DigitalPro Bootcamp for Professional Bloggers was facilitated by eSTRATmedia's Ruben Licera, Jr., one of the leading digital media strategists in the Philippines today. I gained great insights from the talk, and here are the major ones:
Branding and Rebranding
My blog is my personal brand, it is my business. As such, I shall take care of it. I must make sure that my blog communicates its message clearly to the right audience. It is important that its content is specifically targeted to the people I am trying to reach and that it is consistent with the values espoused by my business. For this bootcamp, I will be using Wonderful Cebu as my brand. Wonderful Cebu is a Cebu-centric blog aimed at helping locals and visitors alike learn about places of interest and things to do in Cebu.
More than just technical skills, blogging also requires some good personal habits. Being able to manage time and learn how to prioritize are essentials. One of the things I have to work on is to follow strict schedules on checking social media feeds (specially on Facebook) and on checking e-mails as well.
Social Media Strategies
Social media helps a lot in the blogging practice. I realize I still have to level up my skills in using social media to engage my blog readers specifically in the platforms of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Plus, Pinterest, and Linkedin.
One of the very basic skills a blogger should learn is knowing how to do keyword research. Although I have a fair idea how it is done, I am emptying my cup for this blogging workshop to learn from the best.
